What Are U-Bolts? Types, Materials, Coatings & Sizes

A U-bolt is a curved, bent fastener shaped like the letter “U” with threaded ends on both legs. Its design allows it to wrap around piping, tubing, conduit, or structural members and secure them to a fixed surface with washers and nuts.

U-bolts are widely available in standard length and long tangent configurations:

  • Standard U-Bolts – Designed with shorter legs for compact installations. These are used when clearance is not an issue and the clamping action is straightforward.

  • Long Tangent U-Bolts – Manufactured with extended legs (tangents) for applications that require additional nut adjustment, double-nutting, or clearance for insulation thickness around pipes.

Design Considerations

When specifying U-bolts, engineers should evaluate several factors:

Material Selection

  • Low Carbon Steel: Economical, suitable for indoor or non-corrosive environments.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel: Offers a thick zinc layer for long-term protection in outdoor or structural environments.
  • Stainless Steel (304/316): Provides superior corrosion resistance. Type 316 is preferred in highly corrosive environments such as marine, chemical, and food processing industries.

Coatings and Finishes

  • Zinc Plated: Provides light-duty corrosion resistance.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanized: Significantly improves corrosion protection, making it suitable for exposed structural applications.
  • Specialty Coatings: PTFE or fluoropolymer coatings reduce friction and enhance chemical resistance.

Sizing

  • U-bolts are sized by the nominal pipe size (NPS) they are intended to fit. This refers to the inside diameter of the pipe, not the bolt itself.
  • Critical dimensions include inside width, inside length, rod diameter, and thread length. These must align with both the pipe outer diameter and installation requirements.

Installation Best Practices

Improper installation of U-bolts can lead to pipe deformation, reduced clamping effectiveness, or premature fastener failure. Recommended practices include:

Even Torque Application

  • Always tighten nuts incrementally and alternately on each leg to apply even pressure.
  • Avoid overtightening, which can flatten pipe walls or distort round tubing.

Load Distribution

  • Use flat washers or backing plates to distribute load evenly. This reduces the risk of localized pipe deformation.

Vibration Control

  • In dynamic systems (automotive suspensions, vibrating pipelines), consider lock washers, prevailing torque nuts, or double-nut arrangements to resist loosening.

Corrosion Prevention

  • Match U-bolt materials and coatings to the service environment.
  • For marine or chemical service, stainless steel or specialty coatings are recommended to extend service life.
